How to Get a Hotel Last Minute
For the brave, it's always worth calling the hotel you want to stay in the day you intend to come, or maybe the day before. Hotels tend to be willing to offer huge discounts on the day, such as from their point of view an empty room is a complete waste of money. If you're feeling particularly bold worth it even tells the hotel what you are willing to pay and asking them if there are any rooms available.
This is a particularly effective way of going about getting a really good deal if you are traveling in a city with many hotels, it is outside the peak season and you are flexible in terms of facilities.
If you are not feeling quite so bold in terms of leaving it until the last minute, You may telephone the hotel a few days in advance. While you can not get total bargains, you are still in a good position to negotiate, especially if you is traveling out of season. If you are targeting a specific hotel, check out their cancellation policy. For example, if a specific hotel requires not at least 3 days notice to not charge for a cancellation, then this is the point where they are most likely to receive most cancellation. Hotels are then eager to fill the gap.
Another good way to use the hotel cancellation policy is to book a relatively cheap hotel chain that allows free you to cancel up until the day of travel. Then, in those days you could phone around other hotels to see if you can get a better deal. If you do then you can cancel your previous booking without penalty, if you do not then you still have a roof above your head!
Negotiations extra night free or discount usually only works on smaller regional hotels, like the larger chains have a central system and normally they will negotiate directly with a guest. Bear this in mind when you are choosing your target!
Facilities such as swimming pools, fitness center, satellite TV all add to the cost of a hotel. Consider it carefully. Are you paying extra for facilities that do not like, not necessary and not even notice? If you're after a cheap base, and then avoid the extra hotel facilities as it is almost invariably add to your costs.
