Who is considered the Mother Country of the Philippines?

Spain is considered as our mother country for having "discovered" the Philippines. And for almost 400 years, religion, Western culture, values, art and music, traditions, new ideas and language was introduced to us and became part of our lives. Then came USA in 1898 after the defeat of Spain. USA also introduced freedom, equal rights, a republican government, language, culture, music, ideas, etc. Years ago, I ran some people told me that America is our mother country. To answer this question, you have to define "mother" to context of history. What makes a country a "mother country" with others? Discuss the characteristics, the impression, changes or contributions to each one of them made full effect of our country and what we now. Who then decides to be our mother country and under what circumstances prevailing, the standards, tests or agreements are based on? Finally, can a country like ours, have more than one mother country? Why?

The Philippines is a Spanish colony for over 400 years and so Spain is your "mother" countries. The short conquest USA (50 years) and then makes them release second major influence in your country but not a founding parent. Native countries are countries that lead to colonization and Europeanization of the county under discussion. They influence the laws, culture and language in short the fabric of the country. Later influences may change or add to but not considered foundering or "mother" countries.
