Already wonder how being LGBT will affect our retirement years?

Unlike heterosexuals, we always have to fend for ourselves to "the golden years." Well meaning straight people I ask me all the time, "Are not you afraid of dying old and alone?" and they couch in terms of the feeling of security that I give straight marriages; if security is real or imagined is debatable, of course. But the social support system is certainly weighed in favor of straight couples, especially wives and children. As a financial planner gay, I was heartbroken to meet gay clients that would provide their partners as beneficiaries of their insurance policies, health plans, property, etc. and can not do so because the law (in the Philippines, where I live) prohibits people not "biological family" to inherit them. How do YOU plan for your retirement years?

My partner and I met a lawyer and all the necessary papers drawn up in case tragedy will strike. I like to think that makes us as law wife will allow. We keep our finances separate and each one of us has our own financial planner. We each have 401k of course and have I pension. I am not afraid of growing old; I just hope we are both healthy when we enter the penultimate years of our lives. I picture us going to some gay cruises to different parts of the world. But hey, do not know what the world is going to throw ya.
