Why not Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio chosen as the national heroes of Philippines?
My study Rizal professor told us that Rizal was chosen at that time because it is politically useful and not hinder the American technically the 'colonial rulers' of the Philippines. Rizal did not advocate armed rebellion against Spain and simply wanted equal rights for Insulares or Philippine-born Spaniards, Mestizos, and the middle class ... he was really want to show Spain, but he antagonized the Church and the Friars are executed him for his book. Because Bonifacio actually fought the Spaniards, shed the blood and the Philippine government wanted the country ... is not acceptable to the American political at that time because it can ignite nationalist fervor and encourage rebellion or at least very movement towards freedom!
Simple. Bonifacio was not studied, compared to Rizal. It's highly probable not even he can write his name. He did the Philippine national hero, mind you want children to school proudly look to him as a good example? I'm not undermining the efforts of Bonifacio fighting and defending the country but then, his resume is not wonderful.
