Philippine medical tourism and retirement will need strengthening

Among all the worry brought about by global financial crisis, there exists a silver lining for developing countries.

With the price tag of medical attention in developed countries being too steep, the citizens are traveling to developing countries for their treatment - and they are getting much more than what they bargained for.

Significantly lower fees, world class care and a vacation to boot - the work package for most patients in other countries, which even still together too cost less than single treatment they return home. All this has come labeled under the banner of medical tourism and the Philippines is fast emerging as a major player in Asia.

Patients from the U.S., Europe, Australia and the Middle East are traveling to the Philippines to help treat a fraction of the cost. From the executive check-ups to cosmetic surgery to heart bypasses, the range of services offered in the country is as complete as they are cheap. Top off the spa visits and a tour of the local landscape, then you have an unbeatable combination.

Given all these, the Philippines is making its presence felt in the market in the past several years by organizing and participating in international conferences. Smaller scale conferences and hospitals are also organized tours to foreign and local press, travel agents and industry professionals to see what the Philippines can offer the world.

The promotion of medical tourism is spearheaded by the Department of Tourism (DOT). Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said that his department is pushing for medical tourism because it opens business-to-business opportunities in industry customers. This leads to more investment in hospitals, Spa and other related businesses such as hotels, malls and real estate.

In fact, Secretary Durano foresees that in five to ten years, the industry is "ten times larger ... it (medical tourism) just needs a little push and when it gains momentum, it will have a life of its own. "

Tourism undersecretary Cynthia carrion also uses the same prediction: "If we continue what we started, by 2012, we have as $ 3 billion."

One of the latest in promotional step is publishing the latest travel guide provides complete and useful information for visitors to navigate the world of Filipino health and wellness. Entitled Philippines: The Heart of Asia (The Official Medical and Wellness Travel Guide and Directory), the guide is an absolute necessary tool that provides medical options to travelers the most appropriate place for healing, rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.
