Dynamics GP Report Design Notes

If you are in the report design tool for Microsoft Dynamics GP (formerly This ERP application is known as Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise, please know that the older Great Plains Accounting for Dos, Windows and Macintosh is different from Great Plains Dynamics GP and outside the scope of this publication), we wishes to you a small orientation article. We start with reports of classification, then cover GP related tools and then common reporting tools:

1. Report classification. This first small step can save you a lot of time and potential rework effort. Please, think about your report and where the category this measure: financial report, specific business logic (often referred to as management reporting), except for purely financial (it's Sales, purchase, Project Performance and Timeline, Employee Per Plant, Manufacturing Budget, etc.), or if it is Business Form (Sales Invoice, Customer Statement, Purchase Order, Project Card, the choice of the Ticket, Bill load), or if it is international reporting (if you have design Great Plains reports in your country native language)

2. Financial Reporting. If the first paragraph you decided to sort your report as Financials, you will likely have to deal with Balance Sheet, P & L, Statement of Cash Flow, Trial Balance GL, or adopted versions of the reports mentioned above. If this is the case, the tool selection is simple - review FRx Financial Reporting, and if you are in Small Business Financials, review The GP Advanced Analysis of Financial Reporting (AFA is our opinion that stronger and have more restrictions and require more study time, the comparison FRx, but when it comes free with your Small Business Financials license). FRx deal with GL Accounts, Budget, it has a direct link to the Account Summary table and allows you to combine the dynamics GP GL data to external Excel Worksheets (in the case, when you have less international subsidiary or Small Business Accounting package, or a things such as extract of the Business One, where BS, P & L Export to Excel is very simple). Consolidated reports, this work to reporting Tree, and may have adapted Your full reporting based on reports by Tree Unit, which may account segment or separate company

3. Reporting management. Here, you know that FRx is not the right tool. Now dreadful news - reporting tool is perhaps the most - yes, Crystal Reports! CR can do fantastic work in Dynamics GP Reporting. If you return from the excitement of working activities, remember our proposal, which comes from many cases of copying records CR - try to separate reports SQL Selection of parts from the CR design itself. We We recommend you make a report to the SQL standard as SQL View or Stored Procedure. The Stored Procedure you the most flexibility, as it can deploy intermediate steps, such as temporary table (this is not possible in SQL View). Furthermore, in our opinion, can have similar to CR power of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and even MS Office reporting extension: Excel, MS Access Reports, Microsoft Word report, but these topics are outside the scope

4. Business Forms. If all you have to do is place the logo on Sales Invoice, then turn your attention to GP Modified Reports and Report Writer. RW Dynamics GP are dexterity based module, meaning that you can call RW modified reports directly from Batch or individual Sales Invoice, Order, Quote or window. ReportWriter is limited dexterity index, and in some complex forms printing cases may decide to move to Crystal Reports or SSRS (where base your reports on the actual SQL Select statement)

5. International Dynamics GP Reporting. If your business subsidiary located in the country, where language the ascii agree: English Speaking Countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK; Europe: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Arabic Speaking countries: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, you can deploy GP dexterity reporting. If you are in the country where Unicode characters are needed: China, Korea, Philippines, Japan - probably only consider deploying Crystal Reports, SSRS

6. International consolidated reporting, SAP B1 consideration. If you have found such subsidiary in countries like Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Europe, Philippines, India, China, where the sap Business One ERP and MRP is very popular and is localized and certified by Tax Government Agencies, please consider to add your FRx reports to Excel export from your extract B1 subsidiary abroad
