philippines vacation packages

Is it safe for a Canadian tourist to visit Phlippines? (Davao, the island of Mindanao?)?
I read that there are terrorist groups killing tourists. Is this true? Philippines is such a terrible and dangerous place? I just reserved a package vacation there for 2 weeks, probably Should I cancel my plans to go there and go to Mexico or Cuba instead? I just stay in the city, not venturing outside the city. At the armed escort was great, They make me feel more comfort, safer.
Do not believe everything you read in the media, the country is not bad. Davao is one of the safest places the Philippines. Fly there and fly out. Do not venture too far out of town yourself. Mindanao is almost a Muslim island and had some problems with their kanina but this is just usually a long way away from Davao. Do not worry, go there and have fun.
