What was the name of the Philippines before it was named after King Phillip II?
Some patriotic Filipino artists refuse to call Philippines as “Philippines” as it was named after King Philip II of Spain. The most genuine ancestors of the Filipinos were a mix of Aetas (African-like tribes), Indonesians and Malays… there could be many as these tribes didn’t really merged as one nation and tried to decide on the archipelagos name.
Each island society had it’s own name based on those people’s own language. But, what is called the Philippines today is found on ancient Chinese maps as “Mai – i”.
